Day 1 May 29
Verses to remember...
Prov 22:1-7
This time of year, many people are
involved in graduations. In our church we have three graduating from high
school; they are, Gus Landaeta, Ben Coons and Justin Ryan. I thought I
would take some time to explore some of the nuggets in the gold mine of
Proverbs between now and Labor Day. I will be preaching in Proverbs for the
summer.
I was looking at Proverbs 22 and came
across some wisdom for youth in the first seven verses.
Here is some solid advice you can
encourage any graduates to set as a standard in their lives.
1. Recognize the value of honor (1-2)
2. As a result, practice watchfulness
(3-5)
3. Have respect and awe for God (4)
These values are better caught than
taught, so do your best to incorporate them clearly in the fabric of your
lives.
Have a great day!
Day 2 May 30
Verses to ponder...
Prov 22:8
It is difficult to outline the chapters
of Proverbs, but if we had to, we could say that chapter 22 is divided with
three messages. The first (Consideration of riches & consequences) we
touched on briefly yesterday.
The second division would be titled
something like, "Considerations about talking & judgments".
I just want to take a minute to focus on
verse 8. It is the Old Testament version of "you reap what you sow (Compare
to 2 Cor 9:7)." Actually, the Greek version includes an additional proverb:
"God blesses a man who gives cheerfully, but his worthless deeds will come
to an end."
This passage (8-16) tells us that we can
either share with the poor, or oppress them. If we gain by oppressing the
poor is one of the behaviors that will lead us to poverty. John Knox said,
"Oppress the poor for thy enrichment and before long a richer man's claim
shall impoverish thee."
Keep compassion in the forefront of your
thinking as you serve the Lord.
Day 3 May 31
Verses to ponder...
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Prov%2022:17-29;&version=65;
We enter a new section of Solomon's
communication. Here we find words of the teacher. Solomon calls them "the
sayings of the wise."
We are called upon to learn and to store
these sayings so that we might serve. We are urged to pay attention. So...
PAY ATTENTION.
I just want to put a two point outline
in your head as you read this passage.
#1 Pay attention by listening
#2 Pay attention by looking
See how Solomon addresses these two
thoughts in this passage. I think you'll find some great application.
Day 4 June 1
Verses to ponder....
Acts 20:34-35,
Prov 22:8,16,22
Crown Financial Ministries is developing
a program to enable the poor to learn a higher level of financial
stability.
Our text in Acts, as well as Proverbs 22
that we looked at the last three days, encourages us to give and to help.
It is Crown's desire to give the Third
World countries to take advantage of the opportunities around them. There
are many challenges facing this daunting task. We can especially pray and
we can also ask God how we might be able to sacrifice something in order for
us to give toward this very important project.
